Both apple experts Robert Hogg and Edward Bunyard wrote that the variety was grown early in the nineteenth century at Wadhurst.
The fruit is large and variable in shape from rectangular to conic and strongly ribbed.
The skin is yellow-tinged green and flushed brownish-red, streaked crimson.
The fruit has a savoury, spicy taste with quite a sharp, hard flesh. It is a very good cooking apple.
The tree is vigorous and upright with fruit that can be picked early October and stored until February.
